Dolphins Sunk as Pioneers Cruise to Preseason Win in Capital

WELLINGTON — The Peninsula Pioneers capitalised on a costly second-half red card to secure a gritty preseason victory over the Wellington Dolphins in a stop-start encounter dominated by whistle-happy refereeing and tactical kicking.The opening stanza developed into a pure battle of the boots. Pioneers fly-half Romain Ntamack traded early penalty goals with Wellington's Carter Gordon to lock the scoreboard at 6-6. Wellington broke the deadlock just before the break, executing a crisp attacking sequence that allowed Gordon to slot a brilliant 28th-minute drop goal, handing the Dolphins a 9-6 half-time lead.The match completely cracked open after the interval. The Pioneers struck first blood in the 49th minute when lock Will Tucker standard-set the forward effort, crashing over for a try which Ntamack duly converted to map out a 13-9 lead. Wellington answered instantly, capitalizing on an attacking lineout for winger Fehi Fineanganofo to touch down, with Gordon's conversion wrestling the lead back at 16-13.The game's turning point arrived in the 57th minute. Wellington's Cameron Burgess was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle, with the stadium announcer boldly telling him to "go home and have a week off." Ntamack slotted the subsequent penalty to level the scores at 16-16.Down to 14 men, Wellington’s defensive line finally buckled under the numerical disadvantage. In the 66th minute, Tucker turned provider turned scorer once again, sealing his brace by crossing the line after a sustained period of Pioneers pressure.
