Akaroa NZ The Peninsula Whalers defeated the Hawkes Bay Magpies 14-10 in a tight, error-filled encounter dominated by defensive rucking and disciplinary issues.
The Peninsula Whalers and Hawkes Bay Magpies fought out a dramatic 17-17 draw in a brutal, error-strewn clash defined by breakdown warfare and a chaotic second-half card flurry. The Magpies claimed the early ascendancy in the 12th minute. Winger Macca Springer sliced through the line to score under the posts, with Cam Millar adding the extras for an early 7-0 lead. The Whalers hit back instantly. Dallas McLeod sparked the counter-attack with a powerful line-break, setting up Joe Cokanasiga to crash over in the 15th minute. Fergus Burke converted to lock the scores at 7-7.Buoyed by momentum, the Whalers struck again six minutes later. After testing the Magpies' line through a string of penalties, Louis Bielle-Biarrey found a gap to score. Burke’s second conversion pushed the hosts out to 14-7.Hawkes Bay narrowed the deficit just before the break through a clinical Cam Millar penalty goal, leaving the match finely poised at 14-10 at half-time.The second half transformed into a chaotic war of attrition. Drew Wild and Callum Simpson traded massive, standard-setting runs, but promising attacks were repeatedly undone by a combined dozen knock-ons and forward passes.Discipline completely unravelled in the final 40 minutes, forcing the referee to reach for his pocket three times. Magpies lock Tom Allen was binned in the 46th minute for repeated infringements. The Whalers failed to capitalise on the numerical advantage and soon found themselves in card trouble of their own. Prop Fletcher Newell was sent to the bin in the 53rd minute, followed closely by hooker George Bell in the 57th, leaving the Whalers down to 13 men.Superb defensive rucking initially rescued the match for Peninsula. Jamie Hannah was a menace at the breakdown with two crucial turnovers, while Cornell du Preez came up with a massive turnover in the ruck to stifle a late Hawkes Bay surge. However, the relentless pressure from Hawkes Bay finally told in the dying minutes. Exploiting the disciplinary lapses and riding the momentum of a brilliant late burst from Drew Wild, the Magpies struck with a clutch late converted try to level the scores at 17-17 just as George Bell returned to the field.A frantic final sequence saw both teams desperate to break the deadlock, but desperate defense inside the 22 ensured both sides walked away with a lot to work on from a gripping preseason stalemate.FINAL SCORE: Peninsula Whalers 17 (Tries: Cokanasiga, Bielle-Biarrey; Cons: Burke 2; Pens: Burke) DRAW Hawkes Bay Magpies 17 (Tries: Springer, TBA; Cons: Millar 2; Pens: Millar)
