WFR XXX Pre-Season Friendly 1
The Buenos Aires Bombers have fired an early warning shot across WFR Conference One after producing a commanding 28-7 victory over Bordeaux Les Damiers in their opening pre-season fixture.
In a match dominated by defensive intensity, tactical kicking, and clinical finishing, the Bombers controlled proceedings for long periods and showcased the attacking flair that many believe could make them one of the teams to watch heading into the WFR XXX season.
The Bombers opened the scoring in the third minute when first five Felipe Barla calmly slotted a penalty goal to give the Argentine outfit a 3-0 advantage.
From there, momentum steadily swung in favour of Buenos Aires. A sweeping attack in the ninth minute saw Santiago Carreras slice through the defence to score the first try of the afternoon. Barla added the extras to push the lead out to 10-0.
Bordeaux attempted to respond and thought they had crossed midway through the first half, only for the TMO to intervene and rule out the effort after an extended review.
The Bombers made the French side pay immediately.
Winger Mateo Carreras crossed in the 17th minute following another dangerous attacking movement. Once again Barla was successful from the tee, extending the advantage to 17-0.
A further penalty goal from Barla shortly before halftime capped an impressive opening forty minutes as Buenos Aires entered the sheds with a commanding 20-0 lead.
Defensive Wall Frustrates Bordeaux
While the Bombers' attack impressed, their defence was arguably the bigger story.
Bordeaux enjoyed numerous attacking opportunities throughout the contest, particularly in the second half, but repeatedly ran into a determined Bombers defensive wall.
The French side had a second try ruled out by the TMO in the 66th minute after another lengthy review, highlighting the desperation and resilience shown by the Buenos Aires defensive unit.
Even periods with fourteen men failed to disrupt the Bombers' resolve. Asher Opoku-Fordjour spent time in the sin bin after a yellow card, but Bordeaux were unable to capitalise on the numerical advantage.
Imhoff Delivers the Knockout Blow
With Bordeaux desperately searching for points, veteran star Juan Imhoff delivered the decisive moment.
Following a brilliant attacking sequence sparked by Felipe Barla, Imhoff crossed in the 67th minute to effectively put the result beyond doubt. Although the conversion attempt drifted wide, the Bombers had stretched their lead to 25-0.
Barla added his third penalty goal of the afternoon ten minutes later to complete a superb personal performance and extend the margin to 28-0.
Bordeaux finally found a breakthrough in the dying moments when Donovan Taofifenua crashed over after sustained pressure. Thomas Dolhagaray converted to avoid a scoreless afternoon, but the late consolation could do little to change the outcome.
Barla Pulling the Strings
Felipe Barla was outstanding throughout the contest, finishing with 13 points from the kicking tee while expertly directing the Bombers attack.
Meanwhile, Santiago Carreras, Mateo Carreras and Juan Imhoff all crossed for tries as the Bombers attack showed glimpses of significant firepower.
For Bordeaux, captain Gael Fickou and Charles Ollivon battled hard throughout, but the French side struggled to convert territory and lineout dominance into points.
