The Peninsula Whalers delivered a masterclass in clinical attacking rugby to blow away the Capitol Rhinos 52-24 in a breathless encounter. Guided by the immaculate boot of Richie Mo’unga and powered by a Callum Simpson hat-trick, the Whalers withstood intense periods of defensive pressure before unleashing lethal counter-attacks to secure a comprehensive victory.

An early penalty saw Rhinos’ prop Khutha Mchunu sent to the bin, and Mo’unga wasted no time capitalizing, slotting three consecutive penalties to build an early 9-0 lead. Even when the Rhinos threatened inside the 22, the Whalers' defense held firm, notably securing a crucial tighthead scrum against the feed to clear the danger.
The floodgates opened in the 16th minute when young halfback Dylan Pledger sliced through the line on a brilliant individual run. After a lengthy look from the TMO, Callum Simpson was awarded his first try of the match. Minutes later, a destructive carry from Timoci Tavatavanawai set the platform for Torian Barnes to crash over. Another Mo'unga penalty and a spectacular length-of-the-field effort from Simpson—ignited by a superb James Cameron break—sent the Whalers into halftime with a commanding 33-7 lead, despite a late consolation try from the Rhinos' George Cronje.
The Rhinos threatened a comeback early in the second half when Canan Moodie crossed the line, but the Whalers quickly slammed the door shut. In the 55th minute, Cameron tore through the defensive line yet again to set up Barnes for his second try of the afternoon.
