Lumberjacks Fall Short in Santiago Despite Late Fightback
2026-10-12 21:33:30
A tough away fixture ended in disappointment for the BC Lumberjacks, who suffered a 27–14 defeat at the hands of the Santiago Condors. Despite showing flashes of brilliance—including an early lead and a late scoring surge—the Lumberjacks were ultimately undone by a heavy penalty count, costly handling errors, and a tough 10-minute spell down a man in the second half.
To add injury to insult, influential forward Callum Botchar was forced off in just the 10th minute. Early assessments suggest he will be sidelined for 1–2 games, with Caden Wilson stepping into the fray.
The Lumberjacks spent much of the opening quarter pinned inside their own 22, forced to rely on halfback Jake Gordon’s boot to clear their lines. Santiago took an early 3–0 lead through a drop goal, but the Lumberjacks responded with immense character in the 25th minute. Rebounding instantly from an overturned forward pass scrum, the Lumberjacks launched a devastating attack that saw Rieko Ioane crash over for a brilliant try. Josh Ioane added the extras from the tee to give the visitors a 3–7 lead.
However, discipline began to plague BC. A mounting penalty count consistently gifted territorial advantage back to the Condors. Just before the break, a handling error gave Santiago the platform they needed to strike back, scoring a converted try in the 37th minute to leave the Lumberjacks trailing 10–7 at halftime.
The uphill battle steepened early in the second half. After a Santiago penalty goal extended the deficit, the Lumberjacks suffered a massive blow in the 53rd minute when Tamaiti Williams was shown a yellow card.
Playing with 14 men, the Lumberjacks' defensive line was stretched to the limit. Santiago capitalised efficiently, crossing for two converted tries during and immediately following the power play to blow the scoreline out to 27–7.
Refusing to throw in the towel, the Lumberjacks rallied in the final 15 minutes. The team found a second wind at the breakdown, led by superb ruck work from Tyler Ardron and Payton Teneycke.
In the 71st minute, the forward pack got their reward when Frank Carson barged his way over the line after a sustained attacking spell. Josh Ioane quickly slotted the conversion to pull the score back to 27–14.
The Lumberjacks continued to hunt for a late losing bonus point, securing another tighthead scrum win against the throw in the 78th minute, but time ultimately ran out on the Canadian side's comeback efforts.
