Double Blow for Whalers: Dolphins Take the Points as Bielle-Biarrey Sidelined
2026-10-12 16:43:31
The Peninsula Whalers fell 52–38 to the Wellington Dolphins in a high-scoring fantasy rugby thriller, despite a valiant effort and a heroic performance from first five-eighth Richie Mo'unga.
The Whalers controlled the opening stages and fought fiercely until the final whistle, but an unforgiving second-half surge from the Dolphins—compounded by a devastating first-half injury to star winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey—proved too much to overcome.
The Whalers started with immense intent. Just five minutes in, Jamie Hannah crashed over the line to open the scoring. The momentum stayed with Peninsula as Richie Mo'unga orchestrated the attack, breaking through the line in the 14th minute to score a self-converted try, stretching the lead to 12–0.
A yellow card to Wellington’s Will Stodart in the 16th minute should have sealed the Whalers' dominance, but the Dolphins unexpectedly fired back with a short-handed try. Hannah managed to strike again in the 26th minute for his second try of the match, pushing the Whalers out to a 17–7 lead.
Then came the turning point of the half. In the 30th minute, French dynamo Louis Bielle-Biarrey suffered a severe injury while defending a dangerous Dolphins attack. The star winger was forced off the field, with medical reports confirming he will be sidelined for at least 2–3 games.
The disruption rattled the Whalers. Wellington capitalized immediately on the back of Ruben Love’s brilliance, crossing the line twice in quick succession through Brad Shields and Carter Gordon to steal a 21–17 lead right at the stroke of halftime.
Refusing to back down, the Whalers mounted a signature comeback. Powerful center Timoci Tavatavanawai bulldozed his way over the line in the 52nd minute, and just moments later, Braydon Ennor finished a beautiful play sparked by George Bridge to bring Peninsula back within a single score at 38–31.
With the game on the line, the Whalers appeared to cross the line again in the 65th minute, only for the TMO to heartbreakingly rule it a 'No Try'. Despite Brad Shields seeing yellow for the Dolphins a minute later, the Whalers could not crack the short-handed defense. A late intercept and try by Nikora Broughton put the game out of reach for Wellington.
Showing the true grit of the franchise, the Whalers fought until the 80th minute, allowing Mo'unga to score a spectacular consolation try under the posts to finish the day with an individual haul of 23 points.
