DURBAN HOLD THEIR NERVE AS LEEDS' COMEBACK FALLS THREE POINTS SHORT!
It was billed as one of the standout encounters of Round Three, and the battle between Leeds Tigers and Durban Sports Club certainly lived up to expectations.
Playing before a massive home crowd, Leeds were hoping to make Headingley a fortress. However, Durban arrived with other ideas and produced a dominant first-half performance.
The visitors controlled an extraordinary 72% of first-half possession, enjoyed 56% territory and forced the Tigers into 51 tackles before the break.
Tries to Delport and Hanekom, both converted by Willemse, together with a Willemse penalty, gave Durban a commanding 17–7 halftime lead.
Leeds, who managed just 28% possession during the opening forty minutes, struggled to establish sustained pressure. Their first-half try kept them within striking distance, but the Tigers faced a significant challenge.
The second half was a completely different story.
Leeds fought their way back into the contest, finding greater attacking rhythm and putting the Durban defence under considerable pressure.
With tries from Ellis Genge and Henry Pollock, and two successful conversions from George Ford across the match, Leeds eventually closed the gap to just three points.
Durban, however, refused to surrender their advantage.
The visitors were held scoreless throughout the second half but defended desperately as Leeds searched for a match-winning breakthrough.
One of the defining moments came when a Leeds attack reached the try line, only for the video referee to rule NO TRY, awarding a five-metre scrum instead.
It was a moment of enormous frustration for the home supporters and a massive reprieve for Durban.
Despite finishing with 54% territory, seven line breaks and four offloads, Leeds could not find the additional score they needed.
When the final whistle sounded, Durban had secured a famous 17–14 away victory.

Peninsula Whalers 38–52 Wellington Dolphins | Attendance: 36,310
The historic rivalry between the Peninsula Whalers and Wellington Dolphins produced another extraordinary chapter as the two foundation clubs contested the prestigious Ocean Trophy.
And what a contest it was!
The Dolphins emerged victorious in a spectacular 90-point encounter featuring fourteen tries, reclaiming bragging rights in one of World Fantasy Rugby's most celebrated rivalries.
Wellington's attacking stars were relentless, with Dominic Ropeti completing a sensational hat-trick, while captain Brad Shields and veteran scrumhalf TJ Perenara each crossed twice.
Carter Gordon added another try and kicked six conversions to complete Wellington's eight-try performance.
The Whalers refused to surrender, scoring six tries of their own.
Jamie Hannah and Richie Mo'unga each grabbed doubles, while Timoci Tavatavanawai and Braydon Ennor also crossed.
Mo'unga contributed 18 points through two tries and four conversions, but the Dolphins' attacking firepower ultimately proved too strong.
The contest was not without controversy, with Wellington receiving two yellow cards — Will Stodart and Brad Shields both spending time in the sin bin.
The Whalers also suffered an injury setback when Louis Bielle-Biarrey was forced from the contest.
Despite winning more scrums and lineouts, Peninsula could not contain a Wellington side that enjoyed 57.5% possession and repeatedly found ways through the defence.
Standout performers: Dominic Ropeti's hat-trick, TJ Perenara's double and Richie Mo'unga's 18-point contribution.

New Mexico Diablos 3–18 Capitol Rhinos | Attendance: 7,988
The Capitol Rhinos delivered a disciplined away performance to overcome New Mexico Diablos in a contest dominated by defence and forward pressure.
The opening forty minutes produced little separation between the teams.
New Mexico's Rheno Teoni landed a drop goal, while Beauden Barrett kicked a penalty for the visitors, leaving the scores locked at 3–3 at halftime.
But the second half belonged entirely to the Rhinos.
Sebastian de Klerk crossed in the 42nd minute to give the visitors the lead, before further tries from David Kriel and Beauden Barrett completed the 18–3 victory.
