DOLPHINS ROCKED BY PIRATE RAID IN WFR XXXI OPENER
Brisbane Pirates 40–22 Wellington Dolphins
WFR XXXI Premiership — Round 1
The Wellington Dolphins have been handed a harsh opening-day lesson in WFR XXXI, surrendering a blistering 19–0 start as newly promoted Brisbane Pirates stormed back to claim a stunning 40–22 victory.
For the opening quarter, Wellington looked capable of blowing Brisbane away.
By fulltime, the Dolphins had been held scoreless for the entire second half.
It was a dramatic reversal — and one Wellington will want to address quickly as the new 22-round Premiership marathon gets underway.
PENAUD LIGHTS THE FUSE
Wellington could hardly have asked for a better beginning.
Just two minutes into the contest, Damian Penaud sliced through for the opening try.
At 12 minutes, lock Matt Monaghan added Wellington's second, Carter Gordon converting.
Then Penaud struck again in the 15th minute.
Brisbane 0–19 Wellington.
Three tries in 15 minutes.
The Dolphins were flying. Brisbane PiratesvsWellington Do… Brisbane PiratesvsWellington Do…
But Brisbane refused to fold.
PIRATES FIGHT THEIR WAY BACK
Corey Toole finally got Brisbane moving with a 23rd-minute try before Fraser McReight crossed three minutes later.
Suddenly the momentum had changed.
McReight struck again in the 33rd minute and Andrew Kellaway's conversion put Brisbane ahead 21–19.
Wellington had watched a 19-point advantage disappear in just 18 minutes.
There was still one response before halftime.
With Wellington back on attack, Carter Gordon landed a brilliant drop goal in the 38th minute, giving the Dolphins a slender:
22–21 HALFTIME LEAD.
The game was still Wellington's to win.
Then came the second half.
THE MATCH TURNS COMPLETELY
Brisbane emerged from the break with purpose.
Prop Aidan Ross crossed in the 43rd minute to put the Pirates back in front, 26–22.
Six minutes later came the defining individual moment of the match.
FRASER McREIGHT — HAT-TRICK.
His third try extended Brisbane's advantage to 33–22.
Then hooker Matt Faessler powered across in the 55th minute, Kellaway converting again.
Brisbane 40–22 Wellington.
That was effectively the contest.
Wellington continued searching for a way back, but the Pirates' defence refused to yield.
The Dolphins, who had scored 22 points in the opening 38 minutes, scored nothing over the final 42.
That will be the most frustrating part of the afternoon.
🐬 PENAUD A MAJOR POSITIVE
There were positives despite the defeat, and Damian Penaud's opening burst was certainly one.
Two tries inside the opening 15 minutes showed exactly what the French winger can bring to Wellington's attack.
The Dolphins' opening spell was also proof of what this side can produce when the combinations click.
Penaud ×2 and Monaghan had Brisbane scrambling early, while Gordon's two conversions and drop goal gave Wellington scoreboard control.
The problem wasn't creating the lead.
It was protecting it.
⚠️ A 19-POINT LEAD DISAPPEARS
That will be the central issue for Wellington to review.
From 19–0 ahead, the Dolphins were outscored:
40–3
over the remainder of the match.
Brisbane scored six tries, including McReight's hat-trick, while Andrew Kellaway converted five of them.
Even more significantly, after Gordon's drop goal at 38 minutes:
BRISBANE — 19 SECOND-HALF POINTS
WELLINGTON — 0
For a club with Premiership ambitions, that's a turnaround Wellington simply cannot allow to become a habit.
🏴☠️ GIVE BRISBANE THEIR CREDIT
This wasn't simply Wellington throwing away a game.
Brisbane earned it.
The Pirates showed tremendous composure after falling 19 points behind and demonstrated why promotion to the Premiership should not be mistaken for an invitation to make up the numbers.
Last season's Conference One champions have stepped into the top division and immediately beaten one of WFR's Foundation Clubs.
Their captain Fraser McReight was magnificent, scoring three tries, while Brisbane's forwards gradually wrestled control of the contest.
WFR XXXI's expanded Premiership has already delivered a warning:
There are no easy games.
The new season format has every club facing all 11 opponents home and away across 22 rounds, making recovery and squad management a major part of the championship. World Fantasy Rugby
🐬 NO PANIC — BUT A LESSON TO LEARN
One defeat does not define a 22-round season.
And Wellington have enough quality throughout their 35-man squad to respond.
Ardie Savea.
TJ Perenara.
Carter Gordon.
Damian Penaud.
Ruben Love.
Josh Moorby.
Fehi Fineanganofo.
There is plenty of firepower there.
But Round One demonstrated that this Premiership will punish any side that switches off.
Wellington were brilliant for 15 minutes.
Brisbane were better over 80.
That's the difference.
