Pioneers Make History: Peninsula Secures Earthquake Trophy Final Spot

The Peninsula Pioneers, historically one of the most underachieving teams in WFR history, today created history by qualifying for the Earthquake Trophy final after defeating the Edinburgh Canons 12–0 in a hard-fought semi-final.When asked for comment after the match, head coach Buddha Johnston—a man of few words—just nodded and gave a thumbs-up as he entered the team changing room. Johnston will be particularly pleased with the performance of new recruit Jake Shearer, a player the PRA scrum guru personally recruited during a recent trip back to Scotland. Eight minutes into the match, Bailey Clark, one of the Ellesmere locals, scored a brilliant try from short range following a sustained attack by the Pioneers. Just seven minutes later, Shearer broke free, showing incredible pace as the loosehead prop sprinted 40 metres to score the Pioneers' second try 15 minutes into the game. That would prove to be the entirety of the scoring, as both the Pioneers and the Canons played out the remainder of the match with a massive defensive display. For years, the Pioneers have boasted world-class players through their side yet never seemed to achieve, mostly finishing mid-table in whichever conference they competed in. However, in WFR 30, they finished a clear third behind the two Australian teams with a squad made up mainly of local Ellesmere club players, complimented by four imported players. Now, they have taken it a step further by qualifying for the Knockout Trophy final. Can they go all the way and win the Earthquake Trophy against the Premiership powerhouse, the Silverstream Wild?
