Whalers Hold Off Fierce Flying Fijians in High-Scoring Thriller

The Peninsula Whalers secured a hard-fought 38–20 victory over Fiji in a breathless, end-to-end rugby encounter. Inspired by a clinical masterclass from Richie Mo'unga and an early double from halfback Dylan Pledger, the Whalers weathered multiple Fijian fightbacks to claim a memorable win.
The Whalers set the tone early. After a probing kick-off, the forward pack immediately began targeting Fiji’s set-piece. In the 10th minute, a brilliant, line-breaking run from Ngane Punivai sliced open the defense, allowing Dylan Pledger to cross for his first try. Just three minutes later, a Kemu Valetini knock-on gave the Whalers a scrum inside attacking territory. Launching a relentless assault on the try line, Pledger dove over for his second. After a tense wait from the Television Match Official (TMO), the try was awarded, and Mo'unga's conversion pushed the lead to 14–0.
Fiji struck back quickly through Tuidraki Samusamuvodre, but Mo'unga kept the scoreboard ticking over with a penalty goal in the 18th minute. While Elia Canakaivata responded for Fiji to make it 17–10, the Whalers pack stood tall. Following an excellent touch-finder from Mo'unga, George Bell powered over from an attacking lineout to stretch the lead back to 24–10. Fiji cut the deficit right before the break through Meli Tuni, leaving the score at 24–15 at halftime.
The Whalers came out of the sheds with immediate intent. Just two minutes into the second half, the Whalers crossed the whitewash again. After another extended TMO review, winger George Bridge was awarded the try, with Mo'unga adding the extras to make it 31–15.
Fiji refused to go quietly, striking back through Temo Mayanavanua in the 50th minute after a dangerous run by Manasa Mataele. However, any hopes of a Fijian comeback were quickly dashed. In the 53rd minute, the Whalers launched another clinical attack, sending Callum Simpson over the line. Mo'unga maintained his perfect record off the tee to push the score to 38–20.The final 25 minutes showcased the Whalers' defensive grit. The loose forward trio of Tom Christie, Liam Jack, and Dom Gardiner, alongside hooker George Bell, dominated the breakdowns with crucial turnovers. Despite a missed penalty in the 62nd minute and a resolute Fijian defense denying late scoring opportunities, the Whalers comfortably controlled territory and possession to close out a comprehensive victory.
