LEEDS END DURBAN’S RUN WITH BRUTAL SEMI-FINAL STATEMENT

Minor Premiers turn playoff showdown into a rout as Durban’s WFRXXX campaign ends 65-21
Durban Sports Club’s WFR30 season is over.
After surviving a tense 7-3 playoff battle against Wellington Dolphins, Durban travelled to face Minor Premiers Leeds Tigers knowing they would need their best performance of the season to reach the Championship Final. Instead, they ran into a Leeds side operating at a completely different level.
The Tigers scored nine tries in a devastating 65-21 semi-final victory, turning a 22-7 halftime advantage into a procession after the break and emphatically ending Durban’s championship challenge.
For Kobus van Wyk’s side, the result was painful. But it also underlined the gap between being capable of beating Premiership opponents and consistently operating at championship level.
Leeds Strike Immediately
Durban’s problems began almost from the opening whistle. Handling errors from Cameron Hanekom and Jan-Hendrik Wessels handed Leeds early opportunities, and the Minor Premiers wasted little time capitalising. George Ford crossed after only five minutes following a Fraser Dingwall break.
Six minutes later, Jamison Gibson-Park attacked around the fringes before Ben Earl finished for Leeds’ second try. Ford converted and suddenly Durban were 12-0 down. The warning signs were already clear.
Leeds were playing faster, carrying harder and converting opportunities with ruthless efficiency.
Doris Makes It Three
Durban attempted to settle the contest through Grant Williams’ territorial kicking, but Leeds continued to win the important moments. Caelan Doris crossed in the 16th minute, with Ford adding the conversion to extend the lead to 19-0.
Then came another major setback. Ruan Delport was shown a yellow card in the 21st minute. Ford kicked the resulting penalty. 22-0. For ten minutes, Durban were reduced to fourteen men against the best team in the regular season. At that stage, the semi-final was threatening to disappear before halftime.
Kolbe Creates Durban’s First Opening
Durban finally found something in the 33rd minute. Cheslin Kolbe produced the attacking spark, breaking the Leeds defensive line and creating the opportunity for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Sacha finished the move and converted his own try.
It was Durban’s first genuine moment of attacking quality. At 22-7, there was at least something to chase. Durban had survived the yellow-card period and reached halftime still within theoretical striking distance.
But the second half would be devastating. Five Tries in 12 Minutes. Leeds destroyed the contest immediately after the restart.
Alex Lewington crossed in the 44th minute. Four minutes later, Ben Earl scored his second. Lewington added another in the 52nd. Caelan Doris followed in the 55th. In just eleven second-half minutes, Durban conceded four tries.
The score had gone from 22-7 to 50-7.
The semi-final was over.
The speed and precision of Leeds’ attack exposed Durban repeatedly, with Gibson-Park constantly finding weaknesses around the breakdown and Ford controlling play from first receiver. Whenever Durban made an error, Leeds transformed it into points.
Grant Williams Refuses to Fold
To Durban’s credit, they continued attacking. Grant Williams crossed in the 59th minute after Durban finally generated quick ball close to the Leeds line. Eight minutes later, he scored again after Quan Horn opened the defence with a powerful run. Feinberg-Mngomezulu converted both tries.
At 53-21, Durban had at least given their travelling support something to celebrate.
Williams’ two-try effort typified the fight Durban continued to show despite the scoreboard.
But Leeds had another gear.
Earl Completes the Hat-Trick. Tommy Freeman made another decisive break in the 71st minute before Earl crossed for his third try of the afternoon. It completed a magnificent individual performance from the Leeds back-rower. Ford converted to make it 60-21.
Five minutes later, Ford finished the contest himself, scoring his second try of the match after a break from Max Malins. The conversion was missed but it hardly mattered.
65-21.
A comprehensive semi-final victory. Well done to the Leeds Tigers who have set the pace in the competition.
