Swashbucklers steal dramatic victory after Durban lead for much of an absorbing contest
Durban Sports Club's momentum came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday, with Southern Swashbucklers snatching a dramatic 25-22 victory courtesy of an 80th-minute try in one of the Premiership's matches of the season.
For much of the afternoon, Durban looked set to claim a third victory from four rounds. Instead, the Swashbucklers produced a remarkable late surge to edge a contest that swung repeatedly between two genuine Premiership contenders. The result leaves Durban with a 2-2 record after one of the toughest opening schedules in the competition, but there remains little doubt they have the quality to challenge the Premiership's best.
Durban Strike First
The visitors produced another fast start. Leolin Zas opened the scoring after just eleven minutes before Francke Horn crossed shortly afterwards to cap an impressive attacking sequence orchestrated by Grant Williams. With Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu converting both tries, Durban raced to a deserved 14-0 advantage and threatened to take complete control.
Their defensive pressure and ability to dominate field position frustrated the Swashbucklers throughout the opening quarter.
Home Side Fight-Back
Southern Swashbucklers gradually worked themselves into the contest through flyhalf Danyon Morgan-Puterangi, whose attacking influence grew as the game progressed. His first try reduced the halftime deficit to 14-5 before an outstanding spell immediately after the break saw him score again and add a perfectly judged drop goal to hand the home side its first lead. The contest had suddenly become a classic.
Sacha Answers The Call
As he has done repeatedly this season, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu responded when Durban needed him most.
The young playmaker sliced through the Swashbucklers defence to score a brilliant individual try before calmly extending Durban's lead with a penalty goal. His contribution of 12 points once again underlined why he is rapidly becoming one of the breakout stars of WFR30.
At 22-15 with just over twenty minutes remaining, Durban appeared well placed to close out an important away victory.
Injuries Change The Contest
Momentum shifted when Durban lost two key forwards. Try-scorer Francke Horn departed during the first half with an injury that is expected to sideline him for several weeks. Later, hardworking flanker Paul de Villiers was also forced from the field, placing additional pressure on an already stretched forward pack.To their credit, the replacements responded strongly, with Malcolm Marx immediately making his presence felt at the breakdown.
But the disruption eventually proved significant as the Swashbucklers finished the stronger of the two sides.
One Final Twist
Luke Jacobson narrowed the margin before relentless late pressure forced Durban back onto its own line.
Then, with the final play of the match, Morgan-Puterangi completed a memorable hat-trick to seal victory for the home side. It was a cruel ending for a Durban side that had led for much of the contest and looked capable of claiming one of the Premiership's most valuable away wins.
Standout Performers
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu - Another outstanding display from Durban's young flyhalf. One try, two conversions and a penalty goal highlighted his attacking quality, while his composure under pressure continues to impress.
Leolin Zas - Electric throughout the afternoon.
Scored Durban's opening try, had another effort ruled out by the TMO and consistently challenged the Swashbucklers with his pace and footwork.
Ben-Jason Dixon - One of Durban's most influential forwards.
His breakdown work and defensive effort kept Durban on the front foot during long periods of the match.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Kobus van Wyk was understandably disappointed but refused to dwell on the result: "There's frustration because we put ourselves in a position to win. But there's also perspective. We've played four rounds against quality opposition and every week we've shown we belong. The margins in this competition are incredibly small. We'll recover, we'll improve and we'll be ready for the next challenge."
Premiership Taking Shape
Four rounds into WFR30, the Premiership is proving every bit as competitive as anticipated.
Leeds Tigers, New Mexico Diablos and Southern Swashbucklers have all produced statement victories, while results across the competition have shown there are no easy fixtures.
Durban's victories over Central Vikings and Capital Rhinos demonstrated the quality within the squad, while narrow defeats to New Mexico Diablos and Southern Swashbucklers came against teams currently establishing themselves among the Premiership pace-setters.
Far from derailing Durban's campaign, Saturday's performance reinforced the belief that this side is capable of matching anyone when at full strength.
Injury Watch
Durban will now await updates on two influential forwards.
Francke Horn is expected to miss 2–3 matches.
Paul de Villiers is expected to miss 1–2 matches.
The club's depth will be tested, but the return of Malcolm Marx and the emergence of players such as Cameron Hanekom provide confidence that Durban can continue to compete at the highest level.
Looking Ahead
Round 5 now presents another opportunity for Durban to reassert itself in the Premiership race. If the opening month of WFR30 has taught us anything, it is that no lead is safe, no result can be taken for granted, and every week presents another heavyweight contest. Durban may have suffered a painful defeat. But they remain very much in the fight.
Final Score
