Conference One Round 4: Bombers Steal Late Thriller as Brisbane Smash Taupō and California Run Riot
WFR XXX Conference One — Round 4 Review
WFR Conference One produced its most dramatic round yet, with the previously unbeaten competition leaders brought crashing back to earth, a 57-point shutout, a tense WFRTV finish in Buenos Aires and several clubs reshaping the early ladder race.
Buenos Aires Bombers defeated Hawkes Bay Magpies 10-7 after a scoreless first half and a frantic late exchange of tries. Brisbane Pirates delivered the result of the round by crushing previously unbeaten Taupō Toa 46-7, while Californian Grizzlies overwhelmed Paris Titans 57-0.
Perth Reds continued their impressive rise with a third consecutive victory, Edinburgh Cannon returned to winning form in Bordeaux, and Peninsula Pioneers survived a late Santiago Condors comeback. After four rounds, Conference One no longer has an untouchable leader.
Taupō remain a major force, but Brisbane, Perth, California, Hawkes Bay, Edinburgh and the Pioneers have all shown they can influence the promotion race.
Bombers Win Late WFRTV Thriller
Buenos Aires Bombers 10 def. Hawkes Bay Magpies 7
Buenos Aires Bombers have claimed a dramatic 10-7 victory over Hawkes Bay Magpies after an extraordinary match that remained scoreless at halftime before exploding into life late. The first forty minutes produced no points despite Buenos Aires controlling an incredible 86% of territory. Possession was shared evenly at 50%, but the Bombers spent almost the entire half pressing inside Hawkes Bay territory without finding a way through.
The second half remained locked until the closing stages. Buenos Aires eventually crossed twice through Lucio Sordoni and Jeronimo Gomez Vara, although neither try was converted. Hawkes Bay replied through Isi Tu’ungafasi, with Lincoln McClutchie converting to bring the Magpies within three points.
The final statistics showed a fascinating contrast. Hawkes Bay finished with 61% possession and won five scrums to two, but Buenos Aires edged territory 51% to 49% and defended with enormous commitment. The Bombers completed 75 tackles compared with Hawkes Bay’s 68, while the Magpies were cleaner in possession, committing only four handling errors to Buenos Aires’ eight.
For Hawkes Bay, the defeat will hurt. They controlled more of the ball and fought back late, but the Bombers’ two unconverted tries were enough to secure the result. For Buenos Aires, this was a huge response after their heavy defeat in Perth. Their attack remained imperfect, but their persistence and late finishing delivered a memorable home victory.
Standout ⭐ Jeronimo Gomez Vara
Buenos Aires Bombers Gomez Vara’s late try proved decisive in a match where scoring chances were extremely limited. His finish gave the Bombers the margin they needed to survive Hawkes Bay’s late response.
Brisbane Destroy Unbeaten Taupō
Brisbane Pirates 46 def. Taupō Toa 7
Brisbane Pirates delivered the biggest shock of Round 4, dismantling previously unbeaten Taupō Toa 46-7 in a ruthless six-try performance.
Taupō entered the match as the clear Conference One benchmark after three consecutive victories, including a 43-7 demolition of the Peninsula Pioneers. Brisbane tore that form guide apart. Fraser McReight scored in the tenth minute,
Seru Uru followed eight minutes later and Tom Hooper crossed in the 28th. Declan Meredith added three conversions and a penalty goal as Brisbane surged to a 24-0 lead. Evan Roos gave Taupō some hope with a converted try in the 36th minute, reducing the halftime deficit to 24-7. But Brisbane completely controlled the second half. Dylan Pietsch scored in the 49th minute, Angus Scott-Young crossed in the 67th and Uru completed his double in the final minute.
Meredith added another penalty and finished with 16 points. The Pirates controlled 61.25% possession, won the lineouts 12-9 and spent more time in opposition territory. Taupō never found the attacking rhythm that had defined their opening three rounds.
The loss was compounded by an injury to captain Kurt Eklund, who is expected to miss one to two games.
Standout ⭐ Seru Uru
Brisbane Pirates Uru scored twice and was central to Brisbane’s dominant forward performance. His final-minute try completed one of the biggest results of the Conference One season.
California Humiliate Paris in Nine-Try Shutout
Californian Grizzlies 57 def. Paris Titans 0
Californian Grizzlies produced the most dominant result of Round 4, overwhelming Paris Titans 57-0 in a nine-try demolition.
The match was effectively settled inside the opening half-hour. Cadan Murley scored in the 15th minute, Edwill van der Merwe followed three minutes later and Cory Daniel crossed in the 21st. Sam Golla then added another try before Mark Telea scored in the 34th minute. California led 31-0 at halftime.
The pressure continued after the break. Jack Iscaro scored in the 48th minute, Mark O’Keeffe crossed twice and Daniel completed his own double as the Grizzlies passed 50 points. Handre Pollard converted six of the nine tries. California controlled 65% possession, spent 50 minutes in opposition territory and won the penalty count 9-1. Paris were forced into long defensive periods and never generated enough possession or field position to threaten the scoreboard.
The result represents a major turnaround for California, who had lost narrowly to Taupō before falling heavily to Santiago. This was their most complete performance of the regular season. For Paris, it was a brutal setback only one week after defeating Bordeaux in the French derby.
Standout ⭐ Cory Daniel
Californian Grizzlies Daniel scored twice and played a major role in California’s dominant forward effort. His double helped turn early pressure into an overwhelming victory.
Perth Win Third Straight in Tokyo
Perth Reds 30 def. Tokyo Shoguns 19
Perth Reds continued their remarkable resurgence by defeating Tokyo Shoguns 30-19, securing their third consecutive victory after losing narrowly in Round 1. Jordan Petaia opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Daniel Donato took control of the contest. Donato kicked an early penalty, scored a try in the 23rd minute and converted both first-half tries as Perth built a 17-0 lead.
Aaron Smith scored for Tokyo before halftime, reducing the deficit to 17-5. Donato added two more penalty goals after the break, pushing Perth ahead 23-5 before Tokyo responded through Kagechika Ota. Jack Daly’s converted try in the 68th minute restored Perth’s comfortable margin, although Ryusei Yamaguchi scored late to give Tokyo a respectable finish. Donato ended with 20 points from a try, three conversions and three penalty goals.
Perth controlled 60% possession, won the lineouts 16-12 and edged the scrum count 7-5. Their ability to keep the scoreboard moving prevented Tokyo from ever mounting a sustained comeback.
Standout ⭐ Daniel Donato
Perth Reds Donato delivered an outstanding 20-point performance. His try and accurate goal-kicking gave Perth complete scoreboard control.
Edinburgh Recover to Defeat Bordeaux
Edinburgh Cannon 23 def. Bordeaux Les Damiers 12
Edinburgh Cannon returned to winning form with a composed 23-12 victory over Bordeaux Les Damiers. Bordeaux started strongly and led 7-3 after Gael Fickou crossed in the 15th minute and Aymeric Luc converted. That remained the score at halftime, but Edinburgh gradually took control after the break.
Jamie Dobie landed a drop goal in the 46th minute before Blair Kinghorn scored and converted his own try in the 57th, putting Edinburgh ahead 13-7. Aubin Eymeri replied for Bordeaux five minutes later, narrowing the margin to one point, but the conversion was missed. Kinghorn then took over.
He kicked a penalty goal in the 66th minute and scored his second try five minutes later, converting it to move Edinburgh clear at 23-12. The teams were closely matched in possession and set pieces, but Edinburgh were more clinical after halftime. Kinghorn finished with 20 points from two tries, two conversions and two penalty goals. Bordeaux spent more time in opposition territory but could not turn that pressure into enough points.
Standout ⭐ Blair Kinghorn
Edinburgh Cannon Kinghorn scored two tries and contributed 20 of Edinburgh’s 23 points. His second-half performance decided a tightly contested match.
Pioneers Survive Late Condors Comeback
Peninsula Pioneers 24 def. Santiago Condors 20
Peninsula Pioneers returned to winning form by holding off a furious late Santiago Condors comeback to claim a 24-20 victory. Santiago started strongly through a Tomas Albornoz penalty goal and an early Rodrigo Fernandez try, taking a 10-0 lead. The Pioneers responded through prop Jayden Baxendale, who scored twice in eight minutes to give Peninsula a 12-10 halftime advantage. The second half was controlled by Peninsula for long periods.
Ollie Barham scored in the 62nd minute before Adam Stone crossed following a TMO review four minutes later. The two tries pushed the Pioneers ahead 24-10. Santiago refused to surrender. Fernandez scored his second try in the 74th minute, and Albornoz converted before adding a penalty goal in the 79th.
That reduced the margin to four points and gave the Condors one final attacking opportunity. Peninsula held firm to secure a badly needed victory after their heavy Round 3 defeat to Taupō. The Pioneers controlled 61.25% possession and won the lineouts 14-10, although their 15 handling errors repeatedly gave Santiago chances to remain in the contest.
Standout ⭐ Jayden Baxendale
Peninsula Pioneers Baxendale’s first-half double transformed a 10-0 deficit into a halftime lead and provided the platform for Peninsula’s victory.
Team-by-Team Round 4 Read
Brisbane Pirates
The result of their season so far. Brisbane did not merely beat unbeaten Taupō—they dominated them. The Pirates now look capable of challenging any side in Conference One when their forward pack and kicking game combine effectively.
Perth Reds
Perth are now one of the competition’s hottest teams. Three consecutive wins have followed their Round 1 defeat, and Daniel Donato added another dimension to an already dangerous backline.
Californian Grizzlies
California remain unpredictable, but their best rugby is devastating. A 57-0 victory over Paris demonstrates the ceiling of this squad when possession, discipline and finishing all align.
Buenos Aires Bombers
Not always polished, but incredibly resilient. The Bombers have now produced two hard-fought wins, and their late victory over Hawkes Bay showed considerable character.
Edinburgh Cannon
A valuable response after their heavy defeat in Napier. Blair Kinghorn gave Edinburgh the control and finishing they needed to return to the winners’ circle.
Peninsula Pioneers
The Pioneers recovered from their Taupō nightmare, although their handling remains a concern. They controlled possession against Santiago but nearly allowed a comfortable lead to disappear.
Taupō Toa
A stunning setback. Taupō had looked almost unstoppable through three rounds, but Brisbane exposed them badly. How they respond will be one of Round 5’s biggest storylines.
Hawkes Bay Magpies
A frustrating loss after controlling 61% possession. Hawkes Bay had enough ball to win but could not turn pressure into points until very late.
Santiago Condors
The Condors again showed attacking character, but slow periods continue to cost them. Their late comeback proved dangerous, yet they had already given Peninsula too much scoreboard separation.
Bordeaux Les Damiers
Competitive but unable to close. Bordeaux led at halftime and came within one point during the second half, but Kinghorn’s finishing pulled Edinburgh away.
Tokyo Shoguns
Tokyo showed improvement and scored three tries, but Perth’s control and Donato’s goal-kicking kept them at arm’s length throughout.
Paris Titans
A disastrous result after their French derby victory. Paris were overwhelmed from the opening quarter and must rebuild quickly after conceding nine unanswered tries.
Players Standing Out After Round 4
Daniel Donato — Perth Reds Twenty points from a try, three conversions and three penalty goals in Perth’s third straight victory.
Blair Kinghorn — Edinburgh Cannon Two tries and 20 total points, driving Edinburgh’s second-half victory in Bordeaux.
Seru Uru — Brisbane Pirates Two tries in Brisbane’s shock demolition of Taupō, including the final score of the afternoon.
Declan Meredith — Brisbane Pirates Sixteen points from five conversions and two penalty goals, ensuring Brisbane received maximum value from their dominance.
Cory Daniel — Californian Grizzlies Two tries in California’s nine-try rout of Paris.
Mark O’Keeffe — Californian Grizzlies A second-half double as the Grizzlies turned a major lead into a record-style blowout.
Jayden Baxendale — Peninsula Pioneers Two first-half tries that dragged Peninsula back from a 10-0 deficit.
Rodrigo Fernandez — Santiago Condors Two tries in a losing effort and the central figure in Santiago’s late comeback.
Jeronimo Gomez Vara — Buenos Aires Bombers The decisive try scorer in a gripping 10-7 WFRTV victory.
Lincoln McClutchie — Hawkes Bay Magpies Converted Hawkes Bay’s only try and kept the Magpies within striking distance late.
Early Conference One Picture After Round 4
Round 4 has blown the Conference One race wide open.
Taupō remain among the leading contenders, but their aura of invincibility has disappeared.
Brisbane have shown they can beat the strongest side in the competition, while Perth have now produced three consecutive wins. California possess enormous attacking potential, Hawkes Bay remain dangerous despite defeat, and both Edinburgh and the Peninsula Pioneers have returned to winning form.
Buenos Aires are proving difficult to break down, while Santiago continue to threaten without consistently closing matches.
At the other end of the form table, Paris and Tokyo urgently need results, and Bordeaux must begin turning competitive performances into victories.
