SHIELD STAYS SOUTH! DOLPHINS ROAR BACK, TIGERS MARCH ON & GALWAY SHUT OUT THE DIABLOS

🏆 WFR XXXI PREMIERSHIP — ROUND TWO REPORT SHIELD STAYS SOUTH! DOLPHINS ROAR BACK, TIGERS MARCH ON & GALWAY SHUT OUT THE DIABLOS Round Two of the WFR XXXI Premiership delivered exactly what this competition promised: big scores, brutal turnarounds and immediate consequences. Southern Swashbucklers successfully defended the WFR Challenge Shield with a seven-try demolition of Brisbane Pirates, Wellington Dolphins produced the response of the round by crushing Earthquake Trophy champions Silverstream Wild, Leeds Tigers maintained their perfect start, Capitol Rhinos made it two wins from two, and Durban Sports Club unleashed seven tries against Peninsula Whalers. And in Albuquerque, Galway Greyhounds produced the round's defensive masterpiece — New Mexico Diablos 0, Galway 19. 📺 ROUND TWO SCOREBOARD Fixture Result Southern Swashbucklers v Brisbane Pirates — Challenge Shield 52–21 Wellington Dolphins v Silverstream Wild 49–14 Capitol Rhinos v Perth Reds 23–5 Durban Sports Club v Peninsula Whalers 45–28 Harlequins Cymraeg v Leeds Tigers 12–42 New Mexico Diablos v Galway Greyhounds 0–19 That's 310 points across six matches — and five of the six winners finished with margins of 17 points or more. 🛡️ SOUTHERN SWASHBUCKLERS 52–21 BRISBANE PIRATES THE SHIELD STAYS SOUTH — FAINGA'ANUKU HAT-TRICK DESTROYS PIRATE CHALLENGE WFR Challenge Shield — Attendance: 30,340 Brisbane arrived fresh from their stunning Round One victory over Wellington. They also arrived looking to take the WFR Challenge Shield. Southern had other ideas. The holders produced a devastating opening 20 minutes, with Steven Kitshoff scoring after two minutes, Danyon Morgan-Puterangi crossing at six, Eben Etzebeth at nine and Leicester Fainga'anuku at 20. SOUTHERN 28–0 BRISBANE. Brisbane finally responded through Andrew Kellaway and Fraser McReight to make it 28–14 at halftime, but Southern had already established control. Fainga'anuku struck again immediately after halftime and completed his hat-trick in the 60th minute. Shannon Frizell added Southern's seventh try before Wes Goosen completed the scoring with a late penalty. SOUTHERN SWASHBUCKLERS 52–21 BRISBANE PIRATES Morgan-Puterangi was magnificent from the tee, landing 7/7 conversions, while Southern controlled 60% possession. But victory came at a price. Southern lost Steven Kitshoff and Leicester Fainga'anuku for 1–2 games, while Morgan-Puterangi is listed out for at least 2–3 games. WFR TV TAKE: Brisbane stunned Wellington in Round One. Southern just reminded the promoted Pirates that challenging for the Shield is another level altogether. 🛡️ CHALLENGE REPELLED. SHIELD RETAINED. SOUTHERN ARE STILL THE HOLDERS. ------------------ 🐬 WELLINGTON DOLPHINS 49–14 SILVERSTREAM WILD THAT'S A RESPONSE! DOLPHINS DESTROY THE EARTHQUAKE TROPHY CHAMPIONS What a difference a few days make. After surrendering a 19–0 advantage and losing 40–22 to Brisbane in Round One, Wellington needed a response. They delivered an emphatic one. Against Earthquake Trophy champions Silverstream Wild, no less. TJ Perenara scored after two minutes. Nic Souchon crossed after seven. Brad Shields added another after 20. Carter Gordon scored Wellington's fourth before Shields grabbed his second. HALFTIME: WELLINGTON 35–7 SILVERSTREAM. And unlike Round One, there was no second-half collapse. Gordon scored again after 45 minutes and Asafo Aumua crossed late as Wellington completed a seven-try demolition. Silverstream managed tries through Leni Apisai and Tawera Kerr-Barlow, but little else went right. CARTER GORDON — 2 TRIES + 7/7 CONVERSIONS = 24 POINTS Wellington finished with 66.25% possession, while Silverstream were restricted to just two tries. There was one significant concern: Ardie Savea was injured and is listed out for 1–2 games. Silverstream's Salesi Rayasi was also injured for 1–2 games. WFR TV TAKE: Wellington were embarrassed by the way Round One got away from them. Their answer? 49 POINTS AGAINST THE EARTHQUAKE TROPHY CHAMPIONS. Message received. ------------------ 🦏 CAPITOL RHINOS 23–5 PERTH REDS RHINOS GO 2–0 AS KOK DOUBLE SINKS PERTH Capitol Rhinos are quietly putting together one of the Premiership's most impressive starts. After defeating WFR XXX Grand Finalists Southern in Round One, Capitol backed it up with a controlled 23–5 victory over Perth Reds. Beauden Barrett opened the scoring with a penalty, before Perth hooker Christian Sangiorgi gave the Reds a 5–3 advantage. But Werner Kok crossed before halftime to restore Capitol's lead at 8–5. The second half belonged to the Rhinos. Barrett added another penalty before Kok scored his second. David Kriel then crossed in the 69th minute to put the result beyond doubt. CAPITOL 23–5 PERTH The statistic that leaps off the page? CAPITOL RHINOS — 77.5% POSSESSION. They also dominated the lineouts 18–8. Perth's Adrian Gomez received a yellow card, while Capitol lock Cobus Wiese suffered an injury that will keep him out for at least 2–3 games. WFR TV TAKE: Southern in Round One. Perth in Round Two. THE RHINOS ARE 2–0 — AND PEOPLE SHOULD START PAYING ATTENTION. ------------------ 🇿🇦 DURBAN SPORTS CLUB 45–28 PENINSULA WHALERS KOLBE DOUBLE AS DURBAN ERUPT IN SEVEN-TRY THRILLER This one was wild. Peninsula Whalers came out firing, with tries from Ngane Punivai and Callum Simpson giving them a 14–0 advantage after only 19 minutes. Durban then exploded. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu scored, Imad Khan crossed, Ben-Jason Dixon added another and Khan struck again right on halftime. Despite Henry Bell scoring for Peninsula, Durban had turned 0–14 into a 26–21 halftime lead. Then came the second-half knockout. Leolin Zas scored after 45 minutes. And then Cheslin Kolbe took over. Kolbe crossed in the 51st minute and again in the 64th, stretching Durban's advantage to 45–21. Louis Bielle-Biarrey added a late Whalers try, but the damage was done. DURBAN 45–28 PENINSULA Durban's seven tries came through: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu Imad Khan ×2 Ben-Jason Dixon Leolin Zas Cheslin Kolbe ×2 WFR TV TAKE: Durban were hammered 45–21 by Silverstream in Round One. Their response was to score 45 themselves. FROM 0–14 DOWN TO 45–28 WINNERS. THAT'S SOME TURNAROUND. ------------------ 🐯 HARLEQUINS CYMRAEG 12–42 LEEDS TIGERS CHAMPIONS KEEP ROLLING — LEEDS MAKE IT TWO FROM TWO The champions haven't blinked. Leeds Tigers followed their Round One victory over New Mexico with a convincing 42–12 away win over Harlequins Cymraeg. Tommy Freeman opened the scoring after seven minutes before Guy Pepper, Jamison Gibson-Park and George Ford's boot helped Leeds establish a commanding: 22–0 HALFTIME LEAD. Harlequins finally came alive after the break. Alex Mann scored twice in four minutes, reducing the deficit to 22–12. For a moment, Cymraeg had life. Leeds immediately shut the door. Max Malins scored in the 52nd minute, Alex Waller crossed ten minutes later and Malins grabbed his second in the closing stages. HARLEQUINS 12–42 LEEDS Ford finished with three conversions and two penalties, while Leeds scored six tries. The Tigers also controlled 55% possession and spent significantly more time in Harlequins territory. WFR TV TAKE: The defending champions are now 2–0. And they haven't needed George Ford to do everything himself. That's potentially even more worrying for everybody else. ------------------ 😈 NEW MEXICO DIABLOS 0–19 GALWAY GREYHOUNDS DUPONT DOUBLE — GALWAY SILENCE ALBUQUERQUE And then came the shutout. New Mexico's first home match of WFR XXXI ended without a single point as Galway Greyhounds produced a remarkable defensive performance. The Greyhounds led 7–0 at halftime, despite New Mexico enjoying 62% territory during the opening half. But the fulltime numbers tell an extraordinary story. GALWAY — 91% POSSESSION GALWAY — 66% TERRITORY NEW MEXICO — 0 POINTS Galway scored three tries, with Heffernan crossing once and Antoine Dupont scoring twice. Ross Byrne converted two of the three. NEW MEXICO 0–19 GALWAY Dupont's double provides another reminder of just how dangerous the Greyhounds can be when their superstar scrumhalf gets control of a contest. For New Mexico, however, the opening fortnight has been brutal. They lost 27–12 at Leeds in Round One. Now they've been held scoreless at home. 0–2 TO START WFR XXXI. WFR TV TAKE: This wasn't a shootout. It wasn't chaotic. It was Galway taking control and squeezing the Diablos completely out of the contest. THE GREYHOUNDS HAVE THEIR FIRST WIN — AND THEY EARNED IT WITH A CLEAN SHEET. ------------------ 🌟 WFR TV — ROUND TWO HEADLINE GRABBERS - 🛡️ Southern Swashbucklers — Challenge Shield successfully defended, 52–21. - ⭐ Leicester Fainga'anuku — hat-trick in the Shield defence. - 🐬 Carter Gordon — two tries + seven conversions = 24 points as Wellington destroy Silverstream. - 🦏 Werner Kok — two tries as Capitol move to 2–0. - 🇿🇦 Cheslin Kolbe — second-half double as Durban turn 0–14 into a 45–28 victory. - 🐯 Leeds Tigers — defending champions move to 2–0 with another emphatic victory. - 🐕 Antoine Dupont — two tries in Galway's 19–0 shutout. - 🚫 Galway Greyhounds — the only team in Round Two to concede zero points. - ⚠️ Southern's injury bill — Kitshoff, Fainga'anuku and Morgan-Puterangi all injured during the Shield defence. - 💥 Wellington Dolphins — from a Round One collapse to beating Silverstream by 35 points. ------------------ 📊 ROUND TWO BY THE NUMBERS 310 total points were scored across the six Premiership matches. Southern and Wellington led the scoring with 52 and 49, while Durban added 45 and Leeds 42. Four teams scored at least 40 points. And after two rounds, two particularly significant unbeaten stories are emerging: 🐯 LEEDS TIGERS — 2 WINS FROM 2 🦏 CAPITOL RHINOS — 2 WINS FROM 2 But perhaps the biggest statement belonged to Wellington. Seven days after being outscored 40–3 after taking a 19–0 lead against Brisbane, the Dolphins responded by putting 49 points on Silverstream Wild. That's exactly the sort of response championship contenders need. ------------------ 🏆 WFR TV — THE FINAL WORD Round One introduced WFR XXXI. Round Two turned up the heat. The defending champions remain unbeaten. Capitol Rhinos are suddenly one of the Premiership's hottest clubs. Southern have successfully protected the Challenge Shield. Wellington have emphatically answered their Round One critics. Durban have found their attacking teeth. Galway have produced the first Premiership shutout of XXXI. And New Mexico and Harlequins are already facing pressure after starting 0–2. But the Challenge Shield provides the lasting image of Round Two: ------------------ 🛡️ SOUTHERN SWASHBUCKLERS — STILL THE HOLDERS. Brisbane came to take it. Southern answered with 52 points and seven tries. And now the Shield moves on to its next defence against New Mexico Diablos on 14 October at Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin. 📺 WFR TV HEADLINE SHIELD STAYS SOUTH — CHAMPIONS MARCH ON AS WFR XXXI EXPLODES INTO LIFE! 🔥🏉🏆 ------------------
