In 1992, a young player emerged in the tiny Horowhenua union. He was only 16 and still at school, but Carlos Spencer was instantly recognised as a rare talent. . Auckland were looking for a first-five, since Grant Fox was on the verge of retiring, and Spencer was induced to come north. Although Ponsonby were not directly involved in his move, he linked up with the club in 1994. With two years of rep play already behind him, and an Auckland place clearly waiting, he would prove one of the new breed of player who would rarely turn out in club colours. . Spencer was given the call and made his debut in Wellington against Argentina. The All Blacks ran riot, 93-8, Spencer bagging 33 points. . as one of the best wingers ever to have worn the black jersey. The frightening
thing is that most good judges believe the Auckland’s flyer’s best deeds
are still to come. One of only two players to feature in all 11 All Black
Tests last year, Howlett crossed the line seven times to finish as the
team’s leading try-scorer. He also topped the try-scoring charts for the
Blues and Auckland, where his tally was equal with the best in the first
division of the NPC. Howlett re-signed with New Zealand for three more
years in the off-season and looms as potentially one of the individual
stars of this year’s Rugby World Cup.
