WHALERS HOLD OFF CHARGING RHINOS IN HIGH-SCORING THRILLER

AKAROA – The Peninsula Whalers hung on to secure a thrilling 48-41 victory over the Capital Rhinos in a high-scoring fantasy rugby clash.The massive Rhinos pack proved relentless, putting the Whalers under immense pressure from the opening whistle. A fast start by the Capital side saw them cross for two early tries, forcing the Whalers into fightback mode."We knew we had to run them off their feet," said Whalers coach Byas. "With Tom Christie and Dom Gardiner on the flanks, our tactic was always to get to the ball first. It was a brutal contest, but fortunately, we managed to secure a couple of crucial turnovers."The Whalers' fightback began just before the break. Star playmaker Richie Mo'unga scored right on halftime to close the deficit. Mo'unga proved influential again in the 62nd minute, slotting a crucial drop goal to regain the lead for his side.The victory was anchored by standout individual performances:Cornell Du Preez: The Number 8 continued his blistering form, crossing for two tries to back up his spectacular four-try blitz last weekend.Dylan Pledger: The scrum-half general impressed with a hat-trick. Two of his tries came from superb support play, running perfect inside lines to collect offloads from winger Joe Cokanasiga and center Braydon Ennor. He completed his trio with a sharp, blindside dart to outrun the defense.The win came at a cost, with outside back Max Jorgensen suffering an injury.
